01

Booking a Flight

Kindly reserve your flight several months prior to July 15th. We recommend using Kayak.com via a private browser to find the ideal flight for your journey. Thun's closest airport is Zurich Airport, accessible within an hour by train.

02

EuRail Train Pass

We strongly advise considering a EuRail pass for its cost-effectiveness and convenient train travel. Depending on your itinerary and the type of pass you choose, it allows travel to various European countries.

With the EuRail Pass, you can get half off tickets for boat and gondola rides.

We recommended that your order a Physical Ticket in advance instead of using the App as your ticket (Not a User-Friendly App)

Important Tips as a Tourist

Tip - #01

Language

WC (Water Closet) - Restroom

Hauptbahnhof (HB) - Main Train Station, Ex. Zurich HB

Entschuldigung (ent-SHOOL-degen) - Excuse me

Eingang and Ausgang - Entrance and Exit

Brocki/Brockenhaus - Thrift Store/Secondhand Store

Tip - #02

Almost Everything is Closed on Sundays

Most businesses are closed on Sundays; thus if you are looking to go shopping or buy groceries, the  best option is to go to the closest Main Train Station. You can also go to a restaurant or visit tourist attractions.

Tip - #03

Finding a Restroom

Finding a restroom can be challenging depending on your location. If you're on a train, seize the opportunity to use the restroom. At train stations, you may need to pay 2 Swiss Francs to access the facilities. Alternatively, if you're dining at a restaurant, you can use their restroom.

Tip - #04

Taking the Train

Use the SBB App to look up the train and bus schedule. The SBB App is Switzerland's transportation timetable that provides up to date information and convenient travel planning.

Make sure you are not seated in the First Class train car unless you have a ticket for it. You can upgrade to a first class ticket on the train from the ticket clerk; however, it is cheaper to purchase a ticket at the Ticket Kiosk. (Often people upgrade to first class because the train is too crowded in the 2nd class cars)

When taking the city tram, make sure you are going in the correct direction. For example, take Tram 3 in the direction of Zurich, Albrisrieden.

Certain long-haul trains feature nice restaurants where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Be sure to secure a table in advance, as they tend to fill up quickly.

Tip - #05

Pick Pocketing

Don't leave your important items such as wallets, passports, money, etc in your pocket or easier accecessable purse. Make sure to have a crossbody purse or backpack that won't be easily pick pocketed.

Tip - #06

Weather

The weather is Switzerland can change very rapidly depending what part of the country you are in. In Central Switzerland where Luzern and Thun are located. it can be sunny in the morning and start raining with thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Generally in July it will be around 75 - 90 degrees, with the possibility of some rainy/cloudy days.

Air conditioning units are not commonly used in Europe. If you need AC book an American hotel such as The Hilton or Radisson Hotel.

We recommended to bring one jacket or sweater, buy an umbrella at a Kiosk if needed and bring a portable electric fan to carry around as it may get hot.

Tip - #07

Personal Tips

Don't bother trying McDonald's, Starbucks, Mexican food, soda or any other American chain restaurants in Switzerland. It is not worth it, when in doubt get Italian.

To avoid Foreign Transaction Fees consider signing up for.a credit card with no Foreign Transaction Fee charges (Ex. United Airlines Credit Card) or go to your local bank and exchange cash prior to your travel to avoid ATMs fees.

If you are trying to travel on a budget consider buying food at Coop, Migro, Aldi (grocery store) Bachmann (Bakery) and food court located in Main Train Stations.

Tip - #08

Nothing is Free

If you are offered something always ask if it is complimentary.
